Blame Charles Darwin for your sweet tooth. Research now shows that there is an evolutionary basis for why humans crave sweets: in prehistoric times sweeter food was generally safe to eat, while bitter food was more likely toxic. Also, a sweet taste generally meant the food contained a higher amount of fat, critical for energy reserves to make it through harsh winters or droughts. In other words, humans who ate more sweet things and fewer bitter ones were more likely to survive and have offspring. We're thinking, however, that this trend is reversing. Unlike our prehistoric relatives, modern humans who only eat sweets will have trouble attracting mates for reproduction unless they spend a lot of time at the gym. Could there be a future evolutionary advantage to being good at the Stair-master?
