Wondering about the latest additions to the Curious family? Valerie and Maggie recently graduated college and joined the team as Curious fellows. As part of the Lesson Wrangling team, they will spend a year cutting their teeth on a variety of projects - from finding and recruiting the best teachers on the web - to developing best practices for lessons.
I recently sat down with them to ponder college vs the working world, their favorite lessons on Curious, and their perspectives on working in Silicon Valley as recent grads.
What is different about learning in school vs learning in the workplace?
M: The amount of hands on learning that happens in the working world is particularly striking. It is so valuable to learn by doing - and to interact with smart people who are excited about what we’re building. Every day brings new projects and challenges. Ruthless prioritization is a must.
And of course, I am very happy to say that we still have recess here at Curious!
What is your favorite lesson on Curious?
V: How to Make Reusable Sandwich Bags by Crafty Gemini - green crafting projects make me happy.
M: Handmade Fabric Bracelets by Pink Pistachio - it's a fun way to use old t-shirts to make great accessories.
What are you most excited about working at Curious?
V: I’m excited to ignite people’s curiosity. You know when you’re learning something fascinating, and feel totally awakened? That’s a powerful place to be -- and Curious is all about spreading that magic.
If you were to teach a lesson on Curious, what would you teach?
V: How to Do a Barbell Deadlift. Deadlifting makes me a better person!
M: How to Make the Perfect Omelette. My Dad cooks his eggs in the microwave so this one is for him!
What’s it like being young and working in Silicon Valley?
V: It’s thrilling--I love being around entrepreneurs. What could be a more inspiring environment for someone like me, who’s at the beginning of her career?
M: It’s inspiring to live in an environment where people are so enthusiastic about changing the world.
